Project - John McGovern Book

Born in Bo'ness, Scotland, John McGovern started his footballing career as a 16 year old arriving at games on his bicycle under the guidance of the brilliant management duo of Brian Clough and Peter Taylor at Hartlepool.

In a career that would see him link up with Cloughie and Taylor at Derby County, Leeds United and Nottingham Forest, he became one of the most successful players in English football history. As captain of Forest he twice held aloft the mighty European Cup to cap his amazing career.

These days John is the Ambassador for Nottingham Forest Football Club, and recently was responsible for the appointment of Stuart Pearce as boss at the City Ground.

images/gofpic260.jpg His book "John McGovern - From Bo'ness To Bernabeu - My Story" is an excellent account of his unique insight into the workings of Clough and Taylor, and the methods the pair used to achieve so much success in the game at the very highest level.

The book was therefore a fantastic project to be involved with.

It was a real thrill to take John back to where it all started for him in Hartlepool (see picture below) and to set up TV, Radio and Press interviews in the Region.

Even though he was born in Scotland, John was raised on Hartlepool's Central Estate, so is very much a local lad.

As part of the project to publicise the book, we organised a sell out Sportsman's Dinner, where fans were delighted to hear John reminiscing about his glory days. (see picture top right)

He recounted some wonderful stories of his time at Hartlepools United (as it was known then), where he made history as a teenager in 1968 with the club winning promotion for the first time. He also told of how he felt  winning the European Cup as captain not once, but twice.

The presence of the Media that we arranged to be at the event also enhanced the publicity and marketing of John's book.

images/gofpic262.jpg John is pictured left at one of the many book signings that we arranged, talking to one of a number of national sports journalists that joined us, Martin Hardy from The Independent newspaper.

This was just one of the many national stories that resulted in the book being such a huge success, and the story sold to football fans all around the world.

TV and Radio also clamoured to have John as a guest to tell of his incredible journey.
